Grocery Store Ratios

When I go back to work on Monday (gasp!) my students will pick back up with practicing their Unit Rates, Ratios and Proportions.  This is a skill from 6th grade, so the majority of them get it, but I know that we'll need a lot more practice for their 7th grade common assessment.   I have the ELL 1's and 2's mixed into a group of below basic math students.  This group still hasn't mastered their multiplication tables, if that gives you a better idea of my classroom.  (Yep, 7th graders.  I have so many that have to pull out Multiplication Charts for their math work.)

So, on Wednesday... I'm hoping that we'll get to do my Grocery Store Ratios Activity.

Grocery Store Ratios

What you'll need, if you'd also like to do the activity, will be the weekly circular Grocery Store Ads that come every week in the mail.  (Mine show up on Tuesdays.)  I make sure that I have 6-8 ads that I can use, so each table group will have their own ad.  In years past, I've always X'ed out the beer and wine, but this year I'm going to try and see if they don't make a big deal out it.  (Fingers crossed!)

Each of my table groups will get their own Grocery Store Ad.  Then, they will follow along with my worksheet, answering the questions.  I tried to make sure that I had some Ratio, Unit Rate and then adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals in there as well.

The file on TPT is a Word Doc file, so you can make changes as needed!

  1. Great activity. I have an obsession with finding things to do with the grocery circulars. They are so real life and hands-on....and free! I always am finding something new to do. This will fit in perfectly in my 5th grade class (we do ratios in a few weeks)

  4. I love this. My daughter has been having trouble with ratios and this will be great to do with her for some extra practice. Thanks for sharing! I'm a new follower! I teach in elementary but I have middle schoolers of my own and I love finding things to do with them!
