Math Bingo

I've discovered in my first few weeks back into my "new" classroom - they are struggling math students that have few skills that help them succeed in the classroom. I've been battling on getting them to actually DO their homework (even when I assign only 15 to 20 questions AND let them start it in class...) and to be quiet long enough to listen to my first instruction.

It's going to be a long year. (And these are my 7th graders... my 8th grade class from hell is another post.)

I've gotten the majority of them are now hooked on my Math Bingo. I had my principal order the entire Math Bingo Library from Lakeshore Learning two years ago and I haven't regretted it since. It's a great way to get students engaged, practicing their weak multiplication skills and a fun way to spend a Friday.
Although they complain a bit about my "fabulous prizes" (which is they get to leave at the bell and don't have to wait for me to dismiss them) the majority of them are happy to play.

When I have a few that whine about it's boring or that they never win - I happily tell them that they can do a multiplication worksheet instead. I make sure it's about 50 questions and they quickly stop complaining.

Does anyone else use these games? Any other easy games to play?

  1. Hi LIMS!

I use the multiplication BINGO and the fraction one too!

I posted an easy "Concentration" game on my site for equivalent quantities that you might be able to use--just run off on a few different colors of cardstock (so you can figure out more easily where "lost" pieces go), cut, and put in baggies.

Also, an old standard: Use regular cards with two students... each player turns over a card, and the first one to say the math fact wins the two cards.

I'll keep thinking and get back to you if I think of something else that may work.
