Pinterest Friday

...

Wait?

....

It's Friday already?!  And it's July 12th?

My summer is practically over!  {{sobs}}  I can't believe that it flew by this quickly!  You know what happens - when summer starts you have all these good intentions - then suddenly summer is almost over and you look back at your list and realize all those good intentions went out the window.

Oops?!

Anyway.  It's Friday, so that means it's time to link up with Doodle Bug and the 5 for Friday!

The 5 for Friday will be back in August!  However, Doodle Bug did link up to the Favorite Pins Friday linky and lord knows, I spend a lot of time on Pinterest.

Favorite Teaching Pin

I'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan!  I'm sorted on Pottermore, (Ravenclaw) love the books, even got a piece of writing into a compilation book 10 years ago.  So, to see this cool pin about how this teacher did a Harry Potter classroom is just the coolest thing EVER.  See the house color ribbons?

Here is her link:  http://chamberofmagic.blogspot.com/2012/08/harry-potter-classroom-theme.html

Favorite Cooking/Baking Pin (for Ms. OCD to make for me? haha!)

I am a choco-holic.  No lie.  I basically roam the Earth looking for chocolate.  My friends at work know that they save me the dark chocolate bars in the random chocolate bags.  I come to parties and bring some type of chocolate (brownies, chocolate chip cookies, cake... mmmmmmmm).

So, I found this pin.

Say it with me... Yum yum yum yum YUM!

Favorite Geek Pin

Another not-so-surprising fact is that I love geeky stuff.  My husband is Mr. Star Wars/Walking Dead/Marvel Comic book guy and I always loved it too.  (Geek Romance Match!)

I can't remember when I pinned this, but I love it all the same.

Favorite Miscellaneous Pin

Uh... you're welcome blogging friends.  In fact, after I moved this over, the hotness simply crashed my Pinterest tab.  Hahaha.  Yay for Channing Tatum!

My Pin of the Week

This is my pin about how I put together my own lesson plan book.  Check it out here! :)

If you thought this was fun, go and check out the First Grade Parade and join up!

Brilliant Social Studies Idea!

Sorry about the posting twice on the same day... I just had this great idea from a pin on Pinterest!  This is why Pinterest is so awesome, you can take great ideas and twist them to suit your classroom.

Original Pin Post about Glitter Germs!  This is my original inspiration - the glitter germ lesson is the idea of Little Miss Kindergarten.

Germs!

So - this is my idea for Social Studies and my "Older" kids.  You can do this same lesson but use it as an idea starter to get kids thinking about how diseases spread through cultures.  I'm going to use it as my opener for the Black Plague lesson!

I mean, it's one thing to talk about the Black Plague... but to actually be "infected" - awesome.  Maybe by the Principal or something?!  Fun!

I would... use the Glitter germs to infect a few people to start the lesson and maybe a few objects.  Start the lesson by having the infected kids pass out a those few items, then "trade" them a few times.  See if anyone notices the glitter.  Make sure you spread it around to a bunch of kids - then drop the Black Plague bomb on them.  I would also have them brainstorm ideas for the "infected" versus the "uninfected."

- What do you do if you're not infected?  Hide?  Move away?
- Discuss how the disease also is with the items being passed around (like the fleas/rats on the ships)

I'm also planning on using the video of Remy from Ratatouille that talks about rats when introducing the plague.

Any other ideas for adapting this lesson for the older kids?

Goal Pennant Woes

Has this ever happened to you?  You're searching through Pinterest, find a great pin that you can use for this/next school year.  You pin it.

Right?  Happiness and sunshine ensues.

Then, when you go back and actually click on the link to this magical treasure - IT DOESN'T LINK TO THAT PICTURE!

GR!

This is what I experienced with this pin...

I love this!  I think it will fit in so nicely with my Interactive Student Notebook.  Except - I can't find it.  When you click the Pinterest link - it takes you to a store on TPT, (Jenny K) that doesn't have this item.  So I'm thinking the original pinner used the wrong pin link?  Maybe she took it down?  I really wanted to use this item!

(If you are the author of this item... I would love to give you credit for it!  Let me know!)

EDITED!!!

Thank you to Traci who found the link:  http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Goal-Setting-Star-Pennant-323241

So, if you like that pennant, you can download it there! :)

So, I got fed up.

Made my own.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Goal-Setting-Pennant-727186

It's FREE at Teacher's Pay Teachers.  I also added it to my Pinterest for my Interactive Student Notebook section with some other banners that I found after the fact.

Pinterest "Pin It" Tutorial

Have you been noticing that on some blogs, you can directly pin their pictures when you hover over an image?

Like this:

I thought it was going to be so very difficult, but in reality - it's pretty easy.  Thanks to the people over at BloggerSentral.com, they created a tutorial to help you add the code to your blog!

I thought I would add in some helpful pictures of the process too.

First, start here on the Template Tab for the "Edit HTML" button:

Now, make sure you scroll ALL the way the bottom of your code.

See... line 2028!  Not kidding around.  Remember after the close BODY tag, but before the end HTML tag.

Enter the code from BloggerSentral.com...

and.... MAGIC!  You have the instant pin button on all images.  They have extra steps for being able to not have it on some pictures, but on others too.

Edited... the last BloggerSentral link is now working!  Thanks to everyone who told me!

Teacher Presents!

Two posts in ONE day! Yes, I'm finally finding the time (or forcing myselfto stop being a lazy bum) and post about the Teacher Presents I made a few of my friends this year.

Thanks to Pinterest, which I'm sadly addicted to, I discovered this cool pin for a Teacher Clipboard.  I liked the idea so much that I thought that I would make three of these clipboards for my friends at my school.

I decided I would take pictures of my process to show you all and give some helpful hints!

Items you will need:
  • Clipboard
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Glitter Letter Stickers
  • Paint
  • Brush
  • Mod Podge Glue
  • Any other stickers, ribbons, etc.

First step, youwant to paint the edges of the clipboard. This allows you some wiggle room on your paper. You also don't have to worry
about taking the papers right to the edge of the clipboard. I discovered that in the scrapbooking aisle, you can by the 8.5 x 11" paper instead of the 12x12" and save 50 cents per sheet.  (Yes, here at LIMS, we are all about the savings.)

Next, you want to positon down your paper with sticky squares. I used my left over scrapbooking squares. This just helps you keep your paper in place for the glue step!  As for the measuring part, by using 8.5x11" paper, I only had to determine how much of each paper I wanted to use, then cut once with my paper cutter!

If you use 12x12" paper, then you have to measure the paper to the exposed section of the clipboard, then make your cuts as necessary!

This is the tricky step.

You want touse ModPodge and glue down the paper to the edges. The person who's pin I used said that she glued the paper to the clipboard and then added an extra coat on the outside too. I just coated the entire paper on top to form a seal. A word of caution... the glue caused my paper to get wavy with the dampness of the glue. I was starting to worry and stick extra sticky squares where the paper warped up. All my worrying wasn't necessary because by the next morning, the paper had completely dried flat to the clipboard. (Points to the picture... see how it's kinda damp and shiny? You have to really wait until the morning!)

The last part - the FUN part is decorating and adding in the teacher names!

Here are my finished products!

(Edited: Mor over at a Teacher's Treasure pointed out that I missed the paper cutting step.  I didn't do anything fancy to cut the paper, just eyeballed the amounts I wanted to use and then lined them up.) Thanks for the catch Mor! :)
